“[Harvey]’s homosexuality gave him an insight into the scars which all oppressed people wear. He believed that no sacrifice was too great a price to pay for the cause of human rights.” –Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-CA (b. 22 June 1933) reflecting on the legacy of Harvey Milk in The Advocate on 11 January 1979. Happy Birthday, Senator!!!
Feinstein was President of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors when Supervisor Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone were assassinated 27 November 1998. She succeeded George Moscone as Mayor of San Francisco – a role she held for a decade – and has represented California in the United States Senate since 1992. Senator Feinstein discusses the impact Milk’s assassination had on her in this fantastic piece by CNN’s Dana Bash.
In 2009, Harvey’s nephew Stuart Milk created the Harvey Milk Foundation, which encourages local, regional, national & global organizations to utilize Harvey Milk’s story, style, and coalition building techniques as a platform for furthering the cause of LGBTQ rights. @HMilkFoundation.
